International Alliance on Mental Health and HIV/AIDS
The link between mental health and HIV/AIDS is crucial to reduce poverty in low and middle-income countries. In many countries, lack of good mental health services and stigmatization drive people deeper into poverty, especially if they are living with HIV/AIDS or caring for people living with HIV/AIDS. Mental health problems can pose an additional risk in becoming infected with the HIV virus. In other cases, mental health difficulties follow from infection. Good mental health care and support for people living with HIV/AIDS is therefore key to both improving the lives of people living with HIV/AIDS and preventing further spread of the virus.

In May 2009 Global Initiative on Psychiatry formed the Alliance on Mental Health and HIV/AIDS. The mission of the alliance is to improve mental health services in low and middle-income countries for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV), for people with mental illness (PMI) and their caregivers. Thereby improving the quality of life of the target groups and reducing the transmission of HIV.

The alliance will primarily focus on building capacity of NGO’s working in the field of mental health and HIV/AIDS, training health care workers and other caregivers on mental health and HIV/AIDS and reducing (double) stigma and discrimination of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) and people with mental illness (PMI). They will also study effectiveness of interventions and conduct national and international lobby and advocacy.
